With the introduction of the Velar, Range Rover has taken the pole position in terms of off road capabilities and styling. The exterior of the Velar is uber chic and basically stands out among the SUV’s of it’s class. The notable design of the Velar sports a sloppy roof line, kind of a coupe style sandwiched with practicability and functionality. The rear lamps have a nice subtle touch which flows around the rear and a bit on the side too.
When the stakes are high in styling and dynamic looks, the aerodynamic technology is not far behind. There are no door handles to the Velar. Yes, you read it right. The door handles appear when you tap the unlock button on your key.The panoramic sun roof with the gloss black finish pillars gives a sense that the upper portion of the car is separately assembled. Very Very stylish , Range Rover.
Land rover has done a great job styling the lamps around the car. The headlights, shrunk as when compared to the bigger Range rovers, have a flowing stance towards the end of the A pillar. The continuation is taken up by the rear lamps, which, too are quite similar to the bigger Ranges but a bit sleek.
The cabin of the velar is designed keeping the word minimalist in mind. There are fewer buttons than what you would find in a 1990’s range rover. Everything goes digital, from adjusting the seat to the sat nav, everything is on a flat high definition screen.The velar sports two screens, the above one defining the vehicle dynamics, sat nav, Bluetooth,camera,infotainment etc, whereas the below screen virtually displays the climate and air flow , seats, terrain response etc. The above screen is such that it tilts towards you when operated.The two dials on the screen sport a Panasonic magic dial display, which has embedded screen display in it.Terrain response reads the real imagery, so there’s pretty much nothing hidden from the car. There’s basically everything you can control from these two screens and not get much fidgety about he buttons and knobs.
The rest of the interior is the same classy land rover style. Everything is high gloss finished, there’s high quality leather on the dashboard, the door, the extra soft cushioned seats offer air flow through them, the ambient lighting and much more.The dashboard goes all digital, incorporating much of the vehicle related info on the screen. The rear view camera has the built in jet wash system, so next time your camera gets blurry, well, I don’t think it will. Seats are sort of eco friendly built(they use the waste plastic) and are 20 way adjustable. There’s this massive meridian music system with a whooping 23 speakers around the car, that’s maximal of range rover.!!!!!
Not a bulky SUV it may seem, but trust me, it can accomplish the off roading tasks just like any other SUV. The terrain response is amazing, be it sand, gravel, water(650mm wading depth) or snow, the Velar is up for any challenge.20 inch wheels come as standard on the HSE version. Suspension can be varied giving the car a higher ground clearance(250mm) when required. The Velar is 81% aluminum , providing it the required stiffness on the tarmac along with making it a light weight SUV.
As far as the practicability is concerned, the velar manages it all too well. 673 liters of boot space to haul in any amount of luggage. Being on air suspension the boot can be lowered as and when required, keeping in view the heavy luggage to be popped in.
The range topping Velar S model comes with a beastly , tarmac tearing 3.0 liter V6 , 380 horses which brings up 700 Nm of torque as low as 1500 rpm. Surprisingly, the velar is nearly equivalent to the E class in the sprint run up of nought to 60mph in 5.3 seconds. That’s marvelously quick for a car of this size and presence.
